PUMP SELECTION
How do you size a self-priming industrial water pump?
Match the required flow in GPM to the system's total dynamic head (TDH), then check that duty point on the current manufacturer performance curve. TDH includes the net elevation or pressure requirement plus flow-dependent losses through pipe, valves, and fittings. Do not assume maximum flow is available at maximum head.
Self-priming does not mean dry-starting, and priming lift is not NPSH. Confirm the model's initial casing-fill procedure and published priming-lift data, and keep the suction piping airtight and free of high points that trap air. Calculate NPSH available (NPSHA) for the worst-case system condition—including the lowest liquid level, site atmospheric pressure, liquid temperature and vapor pressure, and suction-side losses at the intended flow—then compare it with the manufacturer's NPSH required (NPSHR) and required margin at the same duty point and speed. The available SPP data does not publish priming lift or NPSHR, so confirm both before selection.
